Paul Okimoto’s story of world travels is inextricably
linked to the rebellion of his father, Tameichi,
who refused to follow in the footstep of his uncle,
a high ranking general in the Japanese Army.
Tameichi’s determination to study despite extreme
poverty nearly led to his death from tuberculosis.
A Christian missionary nursed him back to health
and persuaded him to enter the ministry. He accepted a church
post in San Diego, California shortly before the outbreak of world
war two - the seminal decision of his life. The irony of the decision
to emigrate to the USA his family of four children and wife was
sent to an internment center at the outbreak of WWII, an event that
Tameichi never learned to accept as just.

Oh! Poston Why Don't you Cry For Me? And Other Stops Along The Way eBook Paul M Okimoto

This book is an undiscovered gem for those readers who enjoy memoirs. As a member of a newly immigrated family from Japan to the USA, Paul is removed with his family from Southern California to a internment camp in Poston, AZ at the beginning of WWII. His book covers that time to the present. In between are years that are funny, gut-wrenching, but always entertaining. Perhaps in a legacy to his subconscious, Okimoto, in his adult years is afflicted (or endowed) with wander lust. He travels all over the world, sampling cultures as some people sample wines. Written with wry humor and not an ounce of bitterness, he tells of his early years in the camp where--as a child-- he and his friends made their own entertainment. One such hidden communications center they dug was a tunnel to house the operation using tin cans and other scrap material. Alas, for the budding inventors, it was shut down by parents who feared a collapse of the roof onto the enterprising young technicians. After the war's end he writes of high school and college years, a stint in the US army, and his travelling years.

These years bring Okimoto two wives: one Japanese and one German. His greatest achievement he claims is the seamless coupling of two children from one woman and two from the other into a loving, happy, close family. He now lives near San Francisco where he teaches Judo, rides his bicycle, and talks entertainingly whether in groups of friends or to audiences of book lovers. Usually with a ukulele nearby.

It is a book of a remarkable life.

Oh! Poston Why Don't you Cry For Me? And Other Stops Along The Way eBook Paul M Okimoto Reviews

As a child, one of my lasting WW-II memories is when the father of a Japanese girl (Mariko Akasaki) in my elementary school classroom arrived in class to fetch his daughter for the trek to Poston Internment camp. He bowed to the class, smiled, then took his daughter's hand and they disappeard. I never saw Mariko again. I have carried the image of that happening for many, many years. Mr. Okimoto's book has resoled some of those issues. But, Oh! Poston is much more than that. The "Other Stops Alnog the Way" are fascinating reading. I would hope author Okimoto might give us a
a vol. 2.
